Back in 2012, theSkimm began as a free, daily email newsletter produced from the comfort of co-founders Danielle Weisberg’s & Carly Zakin’s couch. Now, over 6 million people utilize theSkimm as their daily news source. “Skimm’d From the Couch” is the latest development from theSkimm bringing a whole new element to the brand.
This podcast series is the “no BS, no cry” version of how female entrepreneurs develop their ideas into a massive success. Each Wednesday a new guest entrepreneur or trailblazer comes on air to talk about the realities of forging their own path, as well as tips and tricks of the trade. With only three episodes released thus far, it’s the perfect time to subscribe to “Skimm’d From the Couch” and get your weekly dose of inspiration from some wildly impressive women.
Meet The Hosts
Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin first met during a study abroad trip to Rome and reunited shortly after while working at NBC News. Over time, the two became their friends’ source of quick news updates. After all, Weiseberg and Zakin were actually paid to be informed at NBC News. But they realized their friends were not in this same position.
This made them wonder: how many others would like to be informed, but simply don’t have the time to educate themselves? So they quit their jobs at NBC and created theSkimm to address this need. Unfortunately, venture capitalists turned them down hundreds of times, insisting that there was no value for an email media company. But Weisberg and Zakin did not listen to the haters, and guess what – it paid off.
It’s been six years since the start of theSkimm, and the company has gained such popularity that the daily newsletters even reach the inboxes of Oprah Winfrey and Sarah Jessica Parker. What started as an idea no one believed in is now a news source for millions. Weisberg and Zakin are now taking their company a step further with the launch of this new podcast to become not only a source of news, but also a source of inspiration.
Featured Episode: Whitney Wolfe Herd: Founder and CEO of Bumble
Bumble was first known as the dating app that allows women to make the first move. But recently Bumble has been changing the game. With Bumble BFF and now Bumble Bizz, the Bumble brand is expanding beyond the traditional dating app space. The company wants to be the one source for connecting with others whether it’s for love, friendship or networking. Leading this charge is Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder and CEO of Bumble.
In the spirit of “Skimm’d From the Couch”, Zakin and Weisberg interviewed Whitney Wolfe Herd about the “no BS” behind her career journey. They ask how she began developing her dating app idea with the launch of Tinder, the issues she encountered at that company and what made Bumble the natural next step. She also discussed her current struggles as a leader and her ideas for the future of Bumble. Hear it all straight from the mouth of the CEO who is on a mission to continue to tell women to make the first move in not only dating but in all aspects of life.
Why You Should Listen
“Skimm’d From the Couch” exposes the realities of following your passion and making your ideas come to fruition. I appreciate that in the podcast description Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg dub their podcast “Instagram vs Reality“. Rather than showing the glamorous side of creating a business, the podcast unveils the struggle and challenges that are along the way. If you’re interested in starting your own business, “Skimm’d From the Couch” will give the story of people doing it: the good, the bad and the ugly.
