Startup Profile: Coregami, High Performance Formal Wear for World Class Musicians

Performance wear meets the symphony. This might seem like an unlikely pair, but as Kevin Yu realized, it was a pairing that made formal wear more comfortable. His idea of “performal,” formal meets performance wear, is allowing musicians of the finest symphonies to perform without breaking a sweat.

Coregami, founded by Yu, businessman and musician, is an online retailer of high-performance formal wear based in Dallas and is currently the only brand in the world dedicated to bring more function to the form of traditional formal wear.

Coregami products have been tested by musicians of the Dallas Symphony, Dallas Opera, Fort Worth Symphony and other symphonic groups to bring about what Yu believes is “the most comfortable tuxedo shirt in the world.”

The Gershwin, the line of tuxedo shirts now available on the website, has the front pleats and cuffs of a traditional formal shirt but also includes fabric that has four-way stretch, moisture wicking, open-shoulder design to reduce friction and increase range of motion and flat seams to reduce chafing. Musicians wearing the Gershwin don’t even have to bother with dry cleaning, it can be thrown in the wash with other clothing, to the instructions of the shirt, of course.

With the growing success of the Gershwin, Yu is looking to expand Coregami to other formal wear worn by musicians like cummerbunds, bow ties, moisture-wicking chin rests and even formal ladies wear.
