Talk Title: Dark Side of Kilimanjaro
Amber Curry Gracia is a development strategist and Principal of Dallas-based Cinco Strategy Group. Avid traveler, health advocate, strategist and storyteller, she believes that the world and each of us in it are immense places that should be relentlessly explored. She writes often on this topic and others at www.ambercurrygracia.com.
What sparked the idea for your Ignite talk?
By some standards I was raised in humble circumstances, by others I grew up in stark privilege and opportunity. How I choose to view it is simply a matter of context, which is something I struggle to reconcile. Regardless of perspective, I’ve seen first-hand how education, a bit of ingenuity and a ton of hard work can take you to places you never dreamed possible. One such impossibility being the heights of Kilimanjaro; however, four years ago, I had an “Oh #@&%!“ moment on the Roof of Africa and it changed everything.
What’s your day job?
I’ve never really believed in day jobs, but I will answer if I must. I am the Principal of Dallas-based Cinco Strategy Group. In this capacity, I serve as advisor, strategist and facilitator to corporations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are facing complex challenges and in need of strategies for sustainable change. More simply put, I stir up trouble.
What inspires you and how do you stay motivated?
Those among us who break down barriers, transcend life’s circumstances and help others to do the same. Innovators, misfits, adventurers, lion tamers, poets—these are my tribe.
What’s your secret passion?
Spending time in my alternate reality in which I am both an astronaut and Christiane Amanpour.
What places, spaces, and faces do you recommend for someone visiting Dallas for the first time?
Generally, anything and everything BESIDES shopping. More specifically, a morning hike at the Trinity River Audubon Center and Fuel City tacos with a side of elotes.
