The Addison Treehouse, a coworking space known locally as ‘the Treehouse’, is celebrating their 1 year anniversary. We thought it would be the perfect time to interview their current Director, Tara Vornkahl, about how they got started. We’ve also included links to some of the notable startups and freelancers currently working there.
Chirag Gupta: How did the Addison Treehouse get started in 2014?
Tara Vornkahl: When the Addison Treehouse’s sister location, The Dallas Entrepreneur Center (DEC), opened up in 2013, many startup folks were making the trek all the way from north of 635 to take advantage of the great resources that the DEC provided such as co-working space, mentorship, EDU classes, events, etc. In order to better serve this market, the DEC partnered with the Town of Addison to create the Addison Treehouse.
CG: When did you come on board as the new Director?
TV: I stepped into the position July 7th of this year. Time goes by quick!
CG: What’s your favorite thing about working at the Treehouse?
TV: My favorite thing is the daily interaction with our resident startups and entrepreneurs. I get to see wins first hand and I love being able to play a connector role when they need to be pointed into the direction of a resource that can be a catalyst for their company.
CG: What are some of the major milestones that y’all have hit in year one?
TV: First and foremost, former Treehouse Director, Paula Andrea Gean, did a tremendous job building the brand and presence of the Treehouse in its first year. Within the year, we have seen over 6,000 visitors, hosted over 200 events and have held over 300 mentor hours. We have seen great wins for our resident companies like Crudefunders expanding their operations and relocating to Downtown Dallas, PICKUP securing their first round of seed funding of $600,000, and Collide Village alumni, Primal Sensors, scoring their first client since they graduated. Any win for our resident companies is a win for us!
CG: What are you most excited about looking ahead into 2016 and beyond?
TV: I am excited that the Treehouse is becoming more established and a major player and resource within the startup space. There is definitely exciting news regarding potential growth and partnerships on the horizon but you will have to stay tuned and find out 😉 I think a major goal for 2016 is diving deeper to find hidden gems (startups) within the region that are completely unaware what resources are available and inviting them into the awesome startup culture that everyone has collectively created.
