06 Oct Catching Up with Game Cart Golf
Last year, we profiled Game Cart Golf, a modern golf experience designed for players who embrace technology to improve their game, compete with other golfers, and share the results with friends and family. They recently received their patent approval so we caught up with founder, Peter Bastawros to learn more about that experience and what’s next for the startup.
Can you talk a little bit about the technology behind Game Cart?
Players navigate the golf course in a Game Cart, a golf cart equipped with an interactive gaming system consisting of a tablet display and wearable remote controls. The tablet interface enables players to view a 3D map of a hole, measure their shot distance, and get a club recommendation…Carts receive real-time updates based on activity happening on other carts to enable players to compete with any other golfer during the game. Once the game has ended, the results of the game are uploaded to the cloud and made available to players on our Game Space.
What were some of the challenges in the patent approval process?
United States patent law has evolved a lot over the last several years, primarily with the implementation of the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (AIA) on March 16, 2013. It has shifted from a “First to Invent” (FTI) system to “First Inventor to File” (FITF). One of the benefits of the prior First to Invent system is that patent rights are awarded to inventors who conceive of an invention first, rather than who wins the race to the Patent Office. The old system also had stricter guidelines in the approval process. Fortunately, my parent US patent was filed prior to the change so it, along with future patents filed under the parent patent, are grandfathered into the old system.
What’s next for Game Cart golf?
The next step is the fun part! We have completed our functional validation and gained approval from the course owners and golfers. Our next step is market validation with the intent to boost awareness amongst the different facets of the golf industry from private courses to public course and golf leagues. So now it’s time to play!
The social engagement is a key element of Game Cart Golf. In this phase, we’ve added a Social Media strategist onto the team to interact with the community. We’re very excited to be entering this phase as PLAY is what Game Cart Golf was designed to enhance. We invite folks to come out and be part of the fun. We’re running a special promotion during the month of October to play Game Cart Golf for the cost of green fees. You can make a reservation on our website and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for other upcoming promotions.
