Dallas Life Takes Over Snapchat Stories

Full disclosure: I was not a fan of Snapchat and before I left for vacation last week, I didn’t even have the app on my phone. I just didn’t get it and filed Snapchat away with one of those apps that I was simply too old for. After a lot of convincing from a far more savvy friend, I reinstalled the app so that I could share moments from my trip to California.

What I discovered when I opened the app, were stories from all over the world via Snapchat’s City “Life Stories”. “Life” stories on Snapchat are essentially aggregated user-generated snaps from a specific location. The first story I watched was from Toronto. For about two minutes, I saw real people in Toronto playing in the park, taking selfies with their friends, and showcasing the beautiful cityscapes. I’ve never been to Toronto, but more than feeling like I was in the city for a brief moment of time, more importantly I saw just how much I had in common with these strangers in a foreign land. For once, the world felt much smaller. I felt more connected to our global community.

The next story I watched was from Nairobi, Kenya. I’ve also never been to Kenya but growing up in the U.S., it’s an understatement to say that we don’t always have the most nuanced perception of other countries—particularly those in Africa. I saw young people walking to class at their college campus and stylish friends pedaling along in a paddleboat. I saw bustling city streets and vibrant markets. In short, Life Stories on Snapchat transport you to another place and break down stereotypes all at once.

And today is Dallas’ day to shine—even if the weather doesn’t. Today, May 29th, Dallas is Snapchat’s featured city. While we’ll undoubtedly see shots of Cowboy Stadium and the Byron Nelson golf championship, what an opportunity we have to showcase our lovely startup community—and the kick off of Dallas Startup Weekend: Women’s Edition! Just yesterday a young lady and I had a conversation about the bad PR Dallas has—people just don’t know how great our city is but when they learn more about it, they fall in love with Dallas. Let’s use this gift from Snapchat (well there’s a statement I never thought I’d write) and tell the story of our Dallas.

So, find a friend who is younger and cooler than you, learn how to use Snapchat, and showcase our glorious city. Looking forward to seeing you all on Snapchat!
