Uber Rolls Out Low Cost Option

Launching next Monday, Uber will introduce its more affordable ride sharing option called Uber X. Convenient, considering Lyft just launched not too long ago.

As a launch bonus, Uber partnered up with over 40 different establishments around Dallas to provide discounts on goods when you ride with the new service and produce your receipt. The deals include everything from BOGO tacos at Fuzzy’s to half off gym membership at CrossFit 214. Uber X will also provide FREE rides to Dallasites through November 21st.

So the pending question: what will be so different between Uber X and Lyft? Uber X is in beta testing with their pricing right now, but here’s what it will look like while they figure it out. Lyft, of course, remaining donation based.

Base fare: $2
Per mile (speed over 11 MPH): $1.90
Per minute (speed below 11 MPH): $0.30
Minimum fare: $6
Cancellation Fee: $8

Flat Rates:
Downtown Dallas to DFW Airport: $45
Fort Worth to DFW Airport: $50
Downtown Dallas to/from Arlington: $50
Uptown/Downtown Dallas to/from Fort Worth: $90

The cars will be “every day cars for every day use” but it’s unclear whether that means drivers will have the option to use their own cars like Lyft drivers or if they’ll be provided.

What’s also interesting about Uber X driver screening compared to Lyft is something they call a “city knowledge exam.” How extensive it will be remains to be seen. Does that mean navigational skills or fun facts and history fluff?

Either way, it will be interesting to see how it plays out next week when both companies are available as alternative transportation. Will one outlive the other in Dallas? Seems to be your call.

What do you think will happen?
