Local Startup Succeeds with Social Media

Local Dallasite Palmer Dean set out to do something logical: eliminate the cost of advertising a product by using social media.

The result? Successful sales of his OutlinetheSky t-shirt brand.

“The original idea came from a day at Katy Trail Ice House. There were so many graphic tees going on so I wanted to create something simple and cool for Dallas.”

Using his iPad, Dean quickly sketched out an outline of the Dallas skyline against a solid backdrop which he then transferred to a microfiber tee. From there, his idea was perfected into a first batch of 40 t-shirts donning the Dallas sky.

Utilizing Instagram and Facebook as main platforms for advertising, Dean managed to sell 75% of his inventory on his Shopify store within the first day of sales. Since launch in April, Dean has since quit his job to run with OutlinetheSky full time.

“It’s pretty cool to see that it worked out. I saw a girl in town wearing one of the shirts and asked where she found it. Her reply was Instagram.”

OutlinetheSky is now partnering with businesses to co-brand to include different landmarks. Included in their current partnerships are the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as Dallas Culture Map.

OutlinetheSky’s inventory now also includes Austin outlines, with plans to expand to more cities in the near future.
